Nepal Family Health Program II |
Family PlanningOver the last three decades the family planning program in Nepal has made steady progress. From 1976 through 2006 the contraceptive prevalence rate has risen from less than 3% to 48%. Over the same period the total fertility rate has declined by more than half — from 6.3 in 1976 to 3.1% in 2006.Through NFHP II, USAID remains one of the government's principal partners for family planning. The major focus of NFHP II's work in family planning will be to: 1. Continue to mainstream services and training within the Ministry's systems. NFHP II will work together with the Ministry's Family Health Division (FHD) to improve counseling for choice and continuation through training, coaching, support visits, joint planning and feedback mechanisms. Gradually, during the project period, we expect to work to rationalize sterilization services, relying more on year-round static services and less on outreach/ camp approaches. The program will support efforts to strengthen and consolidate service delivery sites providing long acting methods, focusing on health facilities with adequate service volume and in settings where method mix is beginning to broaden. In Core Program Districts, competency-based training will continue to be provided to health workers at the most peripheral level to improve access and quality.
